FAQ: Are Vintage Children's Toys Safe?
What should you look out for when buying vintage children’s decor?
When sourcing vintage children’s decor, I always think it’s important to balance charm with practicality. These pieces are often beautifully made, antique wooden toys, painted objects, ceramic ornaments and brass hooks, but they do need a little more care and consideration than modern equivalents.
One of the key things I always check is the condition of finishes, especially on painted items. I personally test pieces for lead paint* before selling them, as older paints can sometimes contain it, and it’s something worth being mindful of if you’re buying vintage children’s homeware.
It’s also worth looking closely at how a piece is constructed. Check for any loose parts, sharp edges or small detachable elements. I always recommend that vintage children's items are used decoratively, but little hands have a way of getting hold of things they shouldn't.
Many people searching for vintage nursery decor or antique children’s toys are drawn to their character, but I always recommend thinking about where and how the piece will be used - higher shelves or wall-mounted pieces can often be a safer way to incorporate more delicate or older items.
Materials are another consideration. I tend to favour solid, natural materials like wood, brass and well-fired ceramics, which age beautifully and are generally more durable. Soft furnishings or very fragile items may need a bit more caution, especially in busy playrooms or younger children’s spaces.
Above all, I think vintage children’s decor works best when it’s thoughtfully chosen and carefully placed. Whether you’re looking for unique nursery decor, vintage toys or decorative pieces for a child’s bedroom, these items can add so much warmth and personality - just with a slightly more considered approach to safety and condition.
*I use a well regarded Lead Paint Test Kit but they are not 100% accurate so I would not recommend using vintage children's toys for playing - I would keep them out of reach and ornamental.
