FAQ: How To Hang Vintage Wall Decor

How to Hang Vintage Plates, Trays, Wall Plaques and Decorative Tiles

Hanging vintage wall decor is one of the simplest ways to add character and depth to a space. I often use a mix of vintage plates, decorative trays, wall plaques and ceramic tiles to create relaxed gallery walls or smaller, more focused arrangements. These pieces work beautifully together, especially when you vary shapes, sizes and materials like brass, ceramic and glass.

For vintage plates and decorative wall plates, plate hangers or adhesive Disc hangers are usually the easiest option, depending on the weight and finish. Heavier vintage trays and wall plaques may need secure wall hooks or picture hanging hardware. Decorative wall tiles, especially Scandinavian pieces like JIE Gantofta or Gabriel of Sweden, often have built-in hooks or holes for easy hanging.

I always recommend laying everything out on the floor first to get the balance right before committing to the wall. Whether you’re creating a vintage gallery wall, styling decorative plates or hanging antique wall decor, the key is to keep it slightly relaxed and not too symmetrical, it should feel collected over time.
